Week 19 – Sketching Techniques – LT – Printmaking terms
- Define, in your own words, the printmaking terms
- Find examples on the Internet to represent each of those terms
WOOD ENGRAVING
Wood engraving is a printmaking method where the artist engraves a reverse design/image on a smooth surface of a block of endgrain wood, then rolls the block in ink and stamps/prints it onto paper.

LINOCUT
Linocut is a printmaking method that is almost identical to wood engraving. The only difference being that the artist engraves/cuts the design/image on soft linoleum instead of wood.

DRYPOINT
Drypoint is a printmaking technique where an image/design is incised into a metal plate using a sharp, needle-like instrument. The plate then gets inked up and is printed.

ETCHING
Etching is a printmaking process where lines or areas are incised using acid into a metal plate (of iron, copper or zinc), in order to hold the ink in.

ENGRAVING
Engraving is a printmaking technique where lines are cut into a metal plate (of copper or zinc). The plate gets inked up and is printed to form an image.

LITHOGRAPHY
Lithography is a printmaking method that uses a flat stone or metal plate with a smooth surface on which the image areas are worked using a greasy substance, such as oil, fat or wax, so that the ink will adhere to them by, while the non-image areas are made ink-repellent.

SCREEN-PRINTING
Screen-printing is the process of transferring a stenciled design onto a flat surface with the use of a mesh screen, ink and a squeegee.

MONOPRINTING
Monoprinting is a form of printmaking where the image can only be made once. A monoprint is a single impression of an image made from a reprintable block. Rather that printing multiple copies of an image, only one impression may be produces, either by painting or making a collage on the block.

DIGITAL PRINTING
Digital printing is a method of printing a digital image directly onto a variety of media.
